I am reviewing the novel 2010 Odyssey by Arthur C Clarke which is a very good book which I bought at a car boot sale. This is the sequel to 2001 A Space Odyssey which of cause spawned the famous film by Stanley Kubrick. Apparently the book and film were both created at the same time allowing the book to closely follow the film in terms of plot. One major difference was the film was about a mission to Jupiter whereas the book was Saturn. Anyway at the end of the film and book the spaceship slipped through an alien space portal and this book continues in 2010 when the Russians have sent a spaceship to find the Discovery. They find the portal and the spaceship they are looking for. They have already guessed the Discovery may still be intact despite the huge gravity and the astronaut on board was alive until it went through the portal. These aliens also want to make contact with Earth. The Russian spaceship ends up in a precarious orbit and fill all the cabins onboard with air and artificial gravity to try to stop the ship spinning so fast because it is contributing to the pull of the planet’s gravity. The ending makes it obvious there will be a sequel and there were several. I enjoyed reading it and Clarke is often regarded as the greatest science fiction of all time. Apparently this book was written in 1981 on a computer using Word Star software which takes you back a bit.
